Microsoft lands Viacom advertising, content deal

Microsoft Corp won an estimated $500 million, 5-year Internet advertising deal with MTV Networks owner Viacom Inc, giving the software giant a boost against rivals Google Inc and Yahoo Inc.

Microsoft will help Viacom place advertising on its network of entertainment Web sites in the U.S., such as MTV.com. Microsoft will also be the exclusive seller in the U.S. of remnant display advertising, which is ad space that Viacom has been unable to sell, company executives said on Wednesday.

Google wins OK to buy DoubleClick

The Federal Trade Commission on Thursday approved Google's $3.1 billion purchase of DoubleClick, saying the much-criticized deal did not pose a threat to competition in Internet advertising.

The deal, which combines Google's dominance in pay-per-click Internet advertising with DoubleClick's market-leading position in flashier display ads, still faces scrutiny from European antitrust officials, who opened a four-month review in mid-November.

Google Removes RSS Feeds From Search Results

Google Removes RSS Feeds From Search Results:

The Google Webmaster Central Blog announced that Google will no longer include RSS feed results in their search results with the exception of podcast feeds.

The reasoning behind Google dropping RSS feeds from the results is that it is very likely that the RSS feed is a text duplication of an html document and when users view RSS feeds they may not be able to render the XML format in their browsers.

SEOmoz | New Features in Google AdWords & Google Analytics

New Features in Google AdWords & Google Analytics:

There have been a number of updates to Google Adwords and Google Analytics lately, so I thought the SEOmoz community might want a summary of them. For the most part, I am impressed with the new features and Google should be applauded for listening to their user base and responding with these additions.

Google Allows Publishers to Block Ads on Websites

Google is in the process of releasing the Ad Review Center, which allows you to easily control what Google Ads show up on your website. It allows publishers to manually approve or block ads that show on their site, so that only the most relevant ads appear. This means no more advertisements which are offensive or poorly targeted or even ads from your competitors.

The default setting in this feature will be "auto-allow" so ads will run unless you block them. Inside the Ad Review Center you can review all your ads at one time. Alternatively, you can manually review ads before they appear on your site; you'll then have 24 hours to review ads before they are automatically allowed to run on your site.

If you decide to block an ad you'll be asked for a reason and Google will give the feedback to advertisers, so they can use it to improve the quality and relevance of future ad campaigns.

The Ad Review Center will gradually be released to all publishers over the next few months. You'll know you have the feature when you see a green box at the top of your 'Competitive Ad Filter' page, which is located under the 'AdSense Setup' tab.

This new feature is no doubt going to be a great benefit to all website owners who are sick of having those irrelevant ads appearing on their sites. Let us know what you think of this new Google feature by leaving a comment below.

Google Unifying And Putting More Emphasis On "Profiles"

Google Unifying And Putting More Emphasis On "Profiles":

Google Operating System discusses the integration of Google Profiles into most Google services and products and the unification of disparate profiles into a single master profile. Whether and how this might ultimately be integrated with Google's newly reinvigorated social network, Orkut, is unclear. Although they are much less extensive, Profiles may turn out to be to Orkut what Shopping became to Froogle -- a successor and repositioned product. As Google Operating System points out the new Profiles are already in use in several areas on Google, such as Maps and Reader.

Umbrella News - Science - All:

"Google Inc. is working on a new Internet encyclopedia that will consist of material submitted by people who want to be identified as experts and possibly profit from their knowledge.
The concept, outlined late Thursday in a posting on Google's Web site, poses a potential challenge to the nonprofit Wikipedia, which has drawn upon the collective wisdom of unpaid, anonymous contributors to emerge as a widely used reference tool."

AdSense Ad Review: Good for Advertisers? [SearchEngineWatch]

AdSense Ad Review: Good for Advertisers?

AdSense publishers will be able to view ads that advertisers have directed to their sites via Placement Targeting, and choose to block ads they don't feel are 'relevant' to their site visitors.

This will certainly be used by AdSense publishers to (attempt to) maximize AdSense revenues - - publishers will block ads that they deem 'low-revenue' in favor of ads that visitors will click on more frequently.
